Literature workshop.
Every language is a door to a new way of seeing the world. These perspectives are always accessible to us thanks to the written, spoken, and non-verbal world. Short stories, tales and anecdotes are some of the best and richest pieces of writing in the Spanish language, full of nuanced perspectives, of worlds and words never spoken. In this workshop, we follow the best way to find the true gems: analyzing certain excerpts on their own and focusing on the specifics brought to us by a smaller piece of writing.
The titles for this course are specifically curated to bring conversations to the table regarding community, race, language, identity and the unique ways to see the world through the eyes of a different cultural perspective. From the classics to the less well known, we embark on a journey of expansion of perspectives and understanding how others think and how culture, history and socioeconomics shape this way of thinking from the writing of many different parts of the world. When it comes to understanding our own language, there’s nothing better than studying a different one. Over the 5 week period of this workshop, comments and ideas will arise as we dissect the language in each text and its message.
This workshop is designed for those familiar with the Spanish language. It is also designed with a couple other groups in mind, though it is not required to belong to either of these to fully experience this workshop: those who are not acquainted with any of the ways of thinking someone native to the Spanish language might have, and those who are able to use the language. Some of the readings are in both English and Spanish, but most are best enjoyed in their original language. The discussions in this workshop are meant to be multilingual; Spanish, English and Spanglish are all welcomed :)
Curiosity and an open mind are a must in order to take full advantage of this experience.

Conversation workshop.
Engaging in conversation with others can be extremely intimidating. Do I have the right words for this? Do these terms really convey what I want others around me to understand? Do I really have the vocabulary to talk about certain topics with confidence and showcasing my true self and the convictions I want to carry through my words? How do I ensure I will be able to understand people that I talk to? What really is formal speech in Spanish? All of these questions will be answered through this workshop’s drills and conversational practice. All methods and materials will be provided.
Intermediate Spanish is required to take advantage of the class. Together, we will experience 5 weeks full of content and talks to improve your conversational skills and most importantly, dissolve the always unwanted impostor syndrome that haunts us when it comes to this skill. Readings, videos, worksheets and many exercises will accompany us through the journey, all of them guided by yours truly over Zoom.
From formal conversations regarding work and business, to gender neutral language and how to curse someone off without starting a fight at a bar, we will cover the most important aspects of speech and sounding as confident as possible within your skills. As always, curiosity and questions are always a must while on this chatty experience.
